The music in the Marianus Scottus Project honours the work of the monks in the medieval period, especially the Irish monks and those from the Western Isles of Scotland.

The musical voyage begins with the death of the great Irish Christian king Brian Boru when Muiredach Mac Robartaigh was born. He became a monk and hence bore the name Marianus Scottus. The story continues with his life in Ireland, his spiritual journey to become a monk, his journey to Europe and the establishment of his cell in Ratisbon as a fusion of different intellectual and spiritual currents of his time. Today, many churches tell of his success as a "monk of the people” bearing the name Schottenkirche from Erfurt to Vienna and beyond.
